Topic: insulated windows + energy film Posted: 02 Jul 2008 at 5:44pm
I recently ordered some heat reflecting curtians to put on the west windows of our bedroom. They kind of look like aluminum foil except they are flexible like fabric. They kind of remind me of mylar. They don't stick to the windows like tinting film. You just hang them with tension rods. They are supposed to reflect the heat back outside. I put them in my windows and they did seem to make the room cooler. However, my father-in-law told me that you can't do window tinting or foil in thermal windows, that they will get to hot and crack. Is this true. I don't want to bust out my windows, kind of defeats they energy saving properties.

He is a smart man. YES, it's true. If you put an aftermarket film on the interior of any insulated glas you stand the risk of seal failure. Seal failure is when the two pieces of glass loses the seal between them and the glass developes a haze between the glass. Insulated glass is void of air between them, once air is introduced to the environment between the glass, you have seal failure. The reason this happens is that you trap the heat between the glass rather than giving it the opportunity to escape into the air. The heat expands and pops the adhesive sealing the two pieces of glass together. When a company puts a "loE" film in their product, it is placed on the second layer of glass (inside of the exterior glass), this keeps the heat from entering the glass prior to it's dispersal of uv's and heat.
Also consider that most every window company will void any glass warranty with a third party film on it. A good film company such as 3M will usually pick up the cost of replacement however.
